Why Refero

The NHS long-term plan centres around a shift toward shared responsibility for health, with a commitment to enable people to manage their own health and make decisions that are right for them. There are over two million students in University education in the UK, many of which are in communal accommodation or away from home for the first time – a crucial juncture for the leap to managing their own mental and physical health.

75% of mental illness develops before the age of 24, and IPPR research shows a 94% increase in the amount of students attempting to access support services over the past five years. Refero believes that better access to help, using familiar technology as a bridge to reaching equally familiar beacons of support, can help reverse this crisis.

Our objective is to enable students to have immediate digital access to GPs, mental health clinicians, pharmacists and support for long-term conditions, directly from their halls of residence or student services building.

Refero creates channels of communication between clinician and patient that we are all familiar with, like video calling and instant messaging, and makes them NHS applicable, safe and easy to use.

Our higher education support:

  • Helps Universities tackle student mental health improvement targets quickly and practically, with minimum technology investment

  • Creates a permanent link between patient and clinician, fostering higher quality of digital care and encouraging better outcomes

  • Ensures that halls of residence become a more inclusive, less lonely, connected alternative to home for many young students

  • Gives every student free, fast access to a conversation with a clinician at a time that suits them

  • Enables GPs to lessen the burden of Did Not Attend appointments, and creates better engagement with the student population by offering a service that suits their communication preferences

  • Enables sufferers of long-term conditions to engage with their clinicians without travel stress and expense, in the comfort of home surroundings
